O'Neal Wins U. S. Steel Dirt Track World Championship; Owens Clinches Lucas Oil Series Title |
|
Waverly, OH (October 15, 2011) - Don O'Neal of Martinsville, IN led flag-to-flag in capturing the 31st Annual Dirt Track World Championship Presented by Sunoco on Saturday Night at Atomic Speedway. O'Neal started on the pole and paced the field the entire distance to earn $50,000 for his first career win in the event. Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN finished second, enabling him to clinch the 2011 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Championship. Josh Richards of Shinnston, WV came home third followed by Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN and Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC.
O'Neal waited through several caution flags during the event, none of which were major incidents as he brought the MasterSbilt House Car home for the third crown jewel win of the season and his fifth series victory of the year. "Tonight was all about tire management, we were a little softer than the second and third place cars, we just bided our time out there, I drove it as straight as I could, it's pretty easy when you've got a good race car," said the 47-year-old driver, who finished third in the championship points.
O'Neal had some timely cautions as he was about to catch up to the tail end of the field. "I didn't want to see that lapped traffic, the race was one-lane all night, there wasn't much they could do about it, after starting late afternoon while the sun is still up and the rain last night. I have to thank MasterSbilt Race Cars, Randy, Tader and Cody and all those guys back at the shop, they make it possible for me to run as well as we do, Jay Dickens Racing Engines, they been solid all year long, I have to thank Magnaflow Exhaust for coming on board this year, VP Fuels, Superior Cleaning, Independence Lumber, Janowski Insurance and Second Chance Livestock Dispatch and all of our product sponsors we couldn't do it with them."
Owens trailed O'Neal the entire distance to finish second. In doing so, he clinched his first career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Title after finishing runner-up the last two years to Scott Bloomquist. "We came here to win the race of course, but once we got into second we took a few shots at the lead, but we've had a great year," said the driver of the Mike Reece owned, Bloomquist Race Cars Ford.
"You've got to be consistent to win this thing, top five finishes are so important, you've got to able to capitalize when someone else has misfortune, that's part of it," said the 39-year-old Owens who captured eight series wins this year on his way to the championship.
"To say we beat Scott Bloomquist, means a lot, he builds a great race car, I know we went back-and-forth all year in the points battle, my crew worked their tails off all year, we are glad to be celebrating after this race, we were conservative on tires, Don was setting a great pace there tonight, we were glad we didn't hit a lot of traffic. I have to thank everyone from the fans, our souvenir people, and all of our sponsors for their support."
Richards was able to get around Bloomquist to finish 3rd in the Kentucky Fuel, Roush-Yates, Rocket Ford as Bloomquist wound up 4th, ending the year second in points in the Miller Brothers Construction, Roush-Yates, Bloomquist Race Cars Ford. Cook finished the season off with a top five finish in the D&R Racing, Rockstar Energy Drink, MasterSbilt Chevrolet.
Completing the top ten were John Blankenship of Williamson, WV; Steve Francis of Ashland, KY; Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN; Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL; and R.J. Conley of Wheelersburg, OH.

Aukland Aces Atomic DTWC
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
By Scott Wolfe
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO- Schrader's K-C Raceway has a new name (See separate story), thus in essence making Zanesville Ohio driver and Late Model Hall of Famer Rick Aukland the first driver to win at Atomic Speedway since 1983. Aukland claimed the first leg of the U.S. Steel 31st Annual/Sunoco Dirt Track World Championship Saturday night at the newly renamed Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio, where he claimed the 30-lap, $3,000 to win modified A-main.
A large crowd and 94 of the Region's best modified driver's were on hand for a rain-postponed 2nd day of the Dirt Track World Championship modified show Friday night, where the field for the Saturday night finals was set. A large crowd joined the overflowing field through four rain delays. The Modifieds were able to complete their program Friday; however, the Lucas Oil Late Model’s portion of the slate was suspended after a heavy rain until Saturday. Thursday night's program had earlier been postponed by rain to Friday at noon. The Lucas Oil summary follows below.
High winds dried Thursday and Friday's muck to a hard, baked surface. Unlike, Friday when the track was super-fast from top to bottom, Saturday's program saw the track lock down unlike the normal Atomic racing surface. Despite losing the high-against-the-wall feel that is prominent at Atomic, speeds were fast and furious on the low side.
Promoter Carl Short was once-again well-pleased with the K-C/Atomic atmosphere, but disappointed in the weather and the havoc it created. Tentatively and reportedly, the DTWC will be at Atomic for at least the next two years with positive indication that it will be the "Home of the DTWC".
Low rider Aukland said, "I knew the key was staying in my line, keeping it straight, and not wavering too high out of the groove or too low below it. I was fortunate to start up front."
Aukland continued, "The track actually was pretty good for all the rain we had. I appreciate the track crew for working so hard the last three days to make this race possible. The weather is what-it-is and we happened to be in the right spot. I'd like to thank my crew and owner for a great car, and hopefully we put on a great show for the fans."
Said second place Bobby Kitchen, "I had a good car, but was a little disappointed I couldn't keep it up front. I just needed a little more. Thanks to Jr. Nolan and the crew for putting me in the driver's seat."
"It's been a tough year at times," said third place Aaron Scott. "But we came on strong at the end and really had fun tonight. The car was good, but we just needed a little more. I was glad to hang on to third, but would have liked to put it up front. Thanks to all of my sponsors, crew, and car owner."
After rain wiped out the program Thursday, the Modified portion of the DTWC program was to start at 2 p.m. Friday. Sunny skies greeted the crowd early, but pop-up showers four-times delayed the program. After the first delay, the modified program was on target to finish on time for the Lucas Oil late models, but three more times rain slowed the action.
Cars from seven states were on hand for the modified portion of the program that saw Bart Hartman blister the track at a 15:258 which reportedly was a new track record. Further research revealed that AMRA National Champion Kenny Johnson maintained the track record, set in July at 15:226. Never-the-less, Friday saw a fast track and fierce qualifying-heat competition. Cars from the AMRA, UMP, TSMA, and IMCA were represented in the line-up.
Saturday's feature stacked early leader Bobby Kitchen and Rick Aukland against each other with AMRA champ Johnson, fast timer Hartman, 2010 AMRA Road Warrior Champ Matt Holcomb, and the colorful Corey Conley right in the wake.
Great late model heats set the tone for the 30-lap mod feature. Early on multiple groove racing saw side-by-side action, but that quickly shifted to a blitzing freight train around the bottom.
NASCAR legend Kenny Schrader came off the tail to 14th, while young Dustin Linville made some room on the high side of the back chute to charge from 14th to 9th, and Rob Stambaugh from 16th to 11th. K-C Provisional and second place points man at the track behind Dave Fireball Pinkerton came from 27th to 20th.
While great action occurred deep in the pack Kitchen set the early tone, only to have Aukland root the young driver out for number one on lap eight. Hartman had his number 75 flying in third, and moved up out of the groove. There he cut a tire with two laps to go, setting up a drag race to the finish.
Earlier the AMRA's Mike McPherson, Aaron Scott, Tanner Wilson, and Rick Corbin--who moved up the ladder-- engaged in a torrid battle for the top five.
Aukland never received the expected challenge at the finish as he roared on to the win. Hard charger was former TSMA champion Kevin Morehouse in a 15th to 7th place run. 2011 TSMA champ Mark Dickson narrowly missed the show and was an alternate.
Rounding out the top ten were Aukland, Kitchen, Scott, Corbin, McPherson, Conley, Morehouse, Jesse Wisecarver, Dustin Linville, and Dave Jamison.

Previous Reserve ticket holders for DTWC at KC Raceway
As I am sure you have heard by now, the 31st annual DTWC is back at KC Raceway on Oct. 13th 14th and 15th. If you are receiving this letter it means you were there for a previous DTWC and I’m sure remember how good the racing was. We hope you will make plans now to be with us this Oct. for this years Dirt Track World Championship.
This years DTWC is being sanctioned by the Lucas Oil series and will be their grand finale. “We are extremely proud to be joined by as our major sponsor and by the Lucas Oil Series whose year began in Florida this February and will conclude with the DTWC at KC Raceway in October” stated promoter Carl Short.
If you had reserve seats previously, we want you to have the opportunity to renew the seats you had. The previous owner/operators sold the tickets when the DTWC was at KC before and it took a little while to get those records from them, which they so generously dug out of their records.
The only problem is due to the time element and dozens of phone calls and emails from people wanting to get their tickets, we are only going to be able to give you until March 15th to guarantee your old seats before they go on sale to the general public.
This year we are bringing back the crowd favorite Jim Dunn Memorial race for non qualifiers. This was always a hit with both fans and competitors. We are also bringing back the modifieds that always put on a great show at KC. Couple this with the $50,000 to win Dirt Track World Championship, Lucas Oil Finale and we think you’ll agree that this is one event that you don’t want to miss.
You can go to the dirttrackworldchampionship.com website for all of the details and ticket ordering. You can also reach Carl at 865-945-3423 or racetenn@yahoo.com.

PEARSON EARNS $50,000 FOR FIRST DTWC VICTORY
MINERAL WELLS, W.Va. (Oct. 15-16) — Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., earned $50,000 on Saturday at West Virginia Motor Speedway with a victory in the 30th annual Dirt Track World Championship.
Pearson, who started third in the 27-car field at the 5/8-mile oval, slipped under polesitter Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, Ga., on the 70th lap exiting turn two and led the rest of the Carl Short-promoted 100-lapper that returned to its native West Virginia for the first time since 2001.
Pearson labeled his first DTWC triumph "a dream come true" for his Bobby Labonte Motorsports team as he put memories of a pair of big-purse near-misses behind him this season with a victory that matches the richest payday of his career.
Single-file racing dominated much of a race slowed by a single-lap 60 caution, but Clanton and Pearson swapped the lead multiple times. Clanton led 14 laps before Pearson slipped ahead briefly on lap 15, then Clanton stayed in command all the way to the yellow flag for a slowing Tyler Reddick while Pearson continued to chase him.
On the double-file restart, Pearson briefly edged ahead to take command at the green flag, but Clanton had a high-side answer to move back ahead and lead lap 61. He stayed there nine more laps until slipping high in turns one and two, opening a door that Pearson busted through for the winning move.
"I got in front of him on that restart, but he had a little bit softer tire and drove right back by me," the 38-year-old Pearson said. "But once I got some heat in the tire, it came on alive there. The track rubbered up around the bottom there late, and I knew it would be awful tough for him to pass me back, as long as we didn't have a caution."
Clanton realized too late that he needed to move down into the lower groove to maintain the lead.
"It all happened in one corner. I felt good the lap before and I'm just riding there. I went into turn one and it slipped, slipped, slipped," he said. "I looked right and I was afraid I was going to hit the fence. I looked left and here he comes, and there wasn't nothing I could do then."
Pearson built a half-straightaway lead before catching a line of slower cars in the final laps, but Clanton never got close enough to make a serious challenge in the final laps.
Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., a former DTWC winner at West Virginia Motor Speedway, drove his brakeless car to a third-place finish after taking a position from Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., on the race's lone restart. Davenport settled for fourth while ninth-starting Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., was fifth.
Davenport's night wasn't over, though, as he went on to dominate the Fastrak-sanctioned Crate Late Model feature, lapping all but three competitors in the 50-lapper for his second $10,000 payday of the season at WVMS.
Steve Shaver of nearby Vienna, W.Va., who lowered the Super Late Model track record with an 18.858-second lap at WVMS, finished 10th in the 100-lapper and was never a factor.

Landers Captures Modified Portion of DTWC
After a dominating performance in his last visit to 'the Speed Plant', the question asked aroundthe pit areawas "Does anyone have anything for Jared Landers"?
The answerto the question would be determined at the end of the 30 lap open wheel modified main, a race thatre-affirmed thedivision's close competition.
St Clairsville, Ohio's JR Nolan has spent the last couple of years grooming younger driverstotake over thedriving chores in he and brother Tom's '2-Brother's Motorsports' entry, but strapped the belts up andlooked likehe might provide the lesson to the entire 26 car starting field.
Nolan shot off the front row andrim rode the groove, turning back the challenges of NASCAR legend Kenny Schrader, as Landers quickly charged from his 6th starting position to 3rd.
The lead trio initially looked to be in a class of their own, with Nolan stubbornly clinging to a narrow advantage.
Schraderkept up the pressure, and Nolan drifted just a bit high, giving Schrader an opening to the lead on lap 8. A lap later, the same spot on the track allowed Landers an open lane to the runner up position.
Landers quickly reeled in Schrader after breaking into second, but passing the cagey vet was another issue as Schrader hit his marks perfectly, lap after lap.
While Landers literally pushed Schrader down the front stretch at times, Corey Conley and Kevin Morehouse charged up to make this a 4 car lead battle.
With the lap’s ticking off, Landers became more aggressive, but simply couldn't rattle Schrader, who doggedly clung to the slimmest of advantages.
Schrader moved his backstretch entrance line a lane lower, and Landers, feeling pressure fromConley, pounced on the opportunity.
As Landersmade hispass for the lead on lap 23, Jess Hartman arrived to pressure Morhouse and Conley, with all three trying to displace Missouri native Schrader.
With just 2 laps remaining, the races 2nd and final cautionregrouped the field fora 2 lap banzai charge to the checkered flag.
Landers proved equal to the task, motoring away to a $3000 payday, and his 2nd WVMS modified main win of the season. Schraderheld off the hard charging Conley and Morehouse narrowly nipped Hartman, who completed thetop 5. 6th through 10th were Mike Wilson, Nolan, Chris Stotts, Rich Michaels and Jim Fordyce.
"The track fooled me a little tonight" said Landers afterwards. "I really wasn't sure that we would be able to get Kenny (Schrader). We seemed to come on later in the race, and that was thedifference". When asked about thedifference between racing the Late Model and Modified car, Landers said "Well, we didn't do so well with the late model tonight, but I actually enjoy the Modifiedsmore. The late models are so 'line specific', and with the Modifieds it seems like we can move around and use more of the track. I think the racing is actually better with these cars".
In closing, Landers said "I really enjoy racing at this place. I'm sure we'll be back next season!"
Schrader, who finished 1.83 seconds behind Landers' 'Mark Martin Ford' # 777eased out of his own 'Federated Auto Parts' #9 to say "Man, this track is awesome".
Complimenting his Concord, NC neighbor, Schrader stated"Jared is awfully tough in these cars. We've raced against him a lot here lately. He has his program together, and right now he's the benchmark for the rest of us".
Landers’ was the weekends fastest modified qualifier, as he, Jesse Wisecarver, Kyle Brown and Darrel Mayer were the qualifying heat winners. Jim Fordyce and Travis Dickson won the B-main qualifiers.
