Jimmy Owens Completes Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Season in Winning Style
|
|
PORTSMOUTH, OH (October 20, 2012) - Jimmy Owens put an exclamation point on the final race of the season for the series by winning the $50,000 to win 32nd Red Buck Dirt Track World Championship presented by Borrowed Blue on Saturday Night at Portsmouth (OH) Raceway Park. Owens came into the crown jewel event already having clinched the 2012 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series title.
Owens took the lead on lap two from defending DTWC winner, Don O'Neal of Martinsville, IN and led the rest of the way to become the 23rd different driver to capture one of the sport's most prestigious events. Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN came home second, followed by O'Neal, Josh Richards of Shinnston, WV, and local driver Ben Adkins of West Portsmouth, OH.
"I don't know what to say, putting my name on that trophy with all the great drivers that have won this race, means a lot to me and my crew. I have to thank my car owner, Mike Reece, we got together in 2007 and it's been a tremendous relationship since," said the 40-year-old. "I have to thank my crew we went with the right tire choice, the Cornett Engine ran strong and our goal was to win this race one day and we got it done."
O'Neal, who was looking to become the first back-to-back winner of the race, charged to the lead at the start. O'Neal's stay at the top was short-lived as Owens, got by O'Neal him on lap 2. O'Neal continued in the second position behind Owens until lap 13 when Bloomquist wrestled the position away from him.
Owens' seventh Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory of the year came aboard the Reece Monument Company, Gantte Appraisals, Red Line Oil, Midwest Sheet Metal, Sunoco Race Fuels, C&C Trucking, Hoosier Tires, Keyser, and Ohlins sponsored Bloomquist Race Cars Ford.
Owens led the field through heavy traffic on several occasions, but timely cautions allowed a clear track in front of him on the restarts. Bloomquist tried to track down Owens in the final laps, but could never get closer than two car lengths.
"Jimmy ran a good race, congrats to him. Don has had a great year as well, it just tells you the strength of this series," said Bloomquist a 2-time series champion. "We went with a harder left rear tire than anybody, but we just couldn't get up to challenge Jimmy."
O'Neal caught Owens and Bloomquist in the late stages of the race, but settled for third. "Jimmy did a great job, I thought maybe I could get by Scott, but neither one of them slipped out of the groove, our car was just too loose, but we finished the season strong."
Completing the ten were Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL; 24th starting, Steve Francis of Ashland, KY; R.J. Conley of Wheelersburg, OH; Eddie Carrier Jr. of Salt Rock, WV; and Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN.
In preliminary action, Scott Bloomquist set the RedBuck Fast Time amongst the 94 entrants, with a lap of 14.735 seconds. Jimmy Owens set the fastest time in Group B with a time of 15.342 seconds. Scott Bloomquist, Don O'Neal, Dale McDowell, Jimmy Owens, RJ Conley, and Chub Frank won their respective Heat Races. Mike Marlar, Jackie Boggs, and Delmas Conley won their respective B-Mains.

LOLMDS Wraps Up this Weekend at 32nd Annual RED BUCK DTWC Featuring Borrowed Blue
WAYCROSS, GA (October 15, 2012) – The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series wraps up the 2012 season this weekend at Portsmouth Raceway Park with the running of the 32nd Annual RED BUCK Dirt Track World Championship - Featuring “Borrowed Blue”. The Newport Nightmare, Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN and his supporting cast will be celebrating their second consecutive LOLMDS National Championship. Owens heads into the weekend without any points pressure, although he’s working hard to take the 50K back to Newport and add to his list of accomplishments in dirt late model racing. Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, GA will enter this weekend’s event with the Quarter Master Rookie of the Year title in hand. The Clint Boyer Racing team, sponsored by Georgia Boot, will be celebrating a great season and marching through the competition, trying to get their hands on the 50K first place prize.
In the previous 31 events there have been 22 different drivers to capture the event. Dating back to the inaugural running in 1981, there have been five drivers to win the prestigious event more than once. Hall of Famer - Freddy Smith of Seymour, TN leads the way with five wins, followed by the late Jack Boggs of Grayson, KY, who won the race three times. The other three drivers with more than one win in the event are each two-time DTWC winners, including: Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR: Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN; and Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, IL. Babb is the latest repeat winner, dating all the way back to 1998.
Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series star Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN will have two things on his mind when the 32nd Annual RED BUCK Dirt Track World Championship - Featuring “Borrowed Blue” takes place this weekend at Portsmouth (OH) Raceway Park. O’Neal is trying to become the first driver in the history of the event to win in back-to-back years. He is also trying to secure second place in the LOLMDS Championship Points Standings. In winning last year’s $50,000 event, O’Neal added another crown-jewel victory to what has become a Hall-of-Fame career. O’Neal comes into the season finale for the LOLMDS just 30 points ahead of Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN in the battle for second place in this year’s final points standings. O’Neal has finished second twice in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series points and leads the series with 11 wins this year.
While O’Neal is trying to make history this weekend at Portsmouth, three other LOLMDS series regulars are hoping to join the two-time winners club including; Bloomquist, Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL; and Steve Francis of Ashland, KY.
Activity for the 32nd Annual Red Buck Dirt Track World Championship - Featuring “Borrowed Blue” will get underway on Thursday, October 18th with Modified Qualifying, Heat Races and B-Main Events. On Friday, October 19th, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will take to the track for Red Buck Time Trials and Heat Races. Then on Saturday, October 20th, the schedule will have the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series B-Mains up first, followed by the $3,000 to win Modified Feature, the $50,000 to win/$2,000 to start RED BUCK DTWC - Featuring “Borrowed Blue” main event and the $3,000 to win CV Products Jim Dunn Memorial Non-Qualifiers race.
Drivers are reminded that they don’t have to pre-enter the race and that you can enter the event on the day that your division will qualify.
Included at this year’s mega event will be a free concert. Anyone purchasing a race ticket will get to see one of the nations top rising bands in the country. Kentucky’s own, country-rock band “Borrowed Blue” will perform a free concert for fans on Saturday, in front of the main grandstands at 5PM. “Borrowed Blue” is an up and coming band sponsored by Red Buck Entertainment, who just released their debut single entitled "Porch People" as a formal introduction to radio and its listeners on September 18, 2012.

This event is scheduled to air on Sunday November 18th at 2PM EST.
“Red Buck has given so much to the racers and the series. They have worked extremely hard to become such a great icon within the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and beyond. The wonderful relationship we have with Brian Cooper and Ross Haynes of Red Buck has grown even more within the series by becoming the title sponsor of this year’s edition of the Dirt Track World Championship”, stated Ritchie Lewis.
“These folks also have a very talented band by the name of Borrowed Blue. They are a must-see country music band. We had them come out and play earlier in the year and nobody wanted to leave the concert. The band stayed and visited with the excited crowd and showed there true Borrowed Blue colors by making friends with the crowd and enjoying themselves like people want a band to do when they attend a concert. I was really impressed by their professionalism and the ‘down home feel’ they shared with everyone,” stated Ritchie Lewis, Director - Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.
Borrowed Blue is an up and coming band from Kentucky, sponsored by Red Buck Entertainment, and is set to release its debut single entitled "Porch People" as a formal introduction to radio and its listeners on September 18, 2012. A band of brothers, reigning as self-appointed kings of the Lake Cumberland region, the four member group is made up of childhood friends Matt Cooper (lead vocals), Brandon
Davis (drummer), Jordan Latham (rhythm guitar), and Jay Gregory (on lead electric guitar).
This year’s Red Buck Dirt Track World Championship featuring Borrowed Blue will also include a $3,000 to win Jim Dunn Non-Qualifiers Race for drivers not transferring into the 100-lap feature event. Also on the schedule for the three-day mega-event will be a special $3,000 to win open wheel modified feature as well.
“I’m very excited to be partnering with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, Portsmouth Raceway Park, and Red Buck for this year’s event. The staff and folks with Lucas Oil run a very professionally organized show and everyone at Portsmouth Raceway Park have been great to work with. With the added free concert for fans and racers that attend, it should make for a great weekend and a huge event for everyone”, stated Carl Short.
Fans can save money by ordering advanced tickets for the 2012 Red Buck DTWC. The deadline to order advance tickets has been extended to October 8th. This year’s advance 3-day general admission ticket will be $40 or add $5 to reserve your seat for the weekend. O'Neal Wins U. S. Steel Dirt Track World Championship; Owens Clinches Lucas Oil Series Title |
|
Waverly, OH (October 15, 2011) - Don O'Neal of Martinsville, IN led flag-to-flag in capturing the 31st Annual Dirt Track World Championship Presented by Sunoco on Saturday Night at Atomic Speedway. O'Neal started on the pole and paced the field the entire distance to earn $50,000 for his first career win in the event. Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN finished second, enabling him to clinch the 2011 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Championship. Josh Richards of Shinnston, WV came home third followed by Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN and Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC.
O'Neal waited through several caution flags during the event, none of which were major incidents as he brought the MasterSbilt House Car home for the third crown jewel win of the season and his fifth series victory of the year. "Tonight was all about tire management, we were a little softer than the second and third place cars, we just bided our time out there, I drove it as straight as I could, it's pretty easy when you've got a good race car," said the 47-year-old driver, who finished third in the championship points.
O'Neal had some timely cautions as he was about to catch up to the tail end of the field. "I didn't want to see that lapped traffic, the race was one-lane all night, there wasn't much they could do about it, after starting late afternoon while the sun is still up and the rain last night. I have to thank MasterSbilt Race Cars, Randy, Tader and Cody and all those guys back at the shop, they make it possible for me to run as well as we do, Jay Dickens Racing Engines, they been solid all year long, I have to thank Magnaflow Exhaust for coming on board this year, VP Fuels, Superior Cleaning, Independence Lumber, Janowski Insurance and Second Chance Livestock Dispatch and all of our product sponsors we couldn't do it with them."
Owens trailed O'Neal the entire distance to finish second. In doing so, he clinched his first career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Title after finishing runner-up the last two years to Scott Bloomquist. "We came here to win the race of course, but once we got into second we took a few shots at the lead, but we've had a great year," said the driver of the Mike Reece owned, Bloomquist Race Cars Ford.
"You've got to be consistent to win this thing, top five finishes are so important, you've got to able to capitalize when someone else has misfortune, that's part of it," said the 39-year-old Owens who captured eight series wins this year on his way to the championship.
"To say we beat Scott Bloomquist, means a lot, he builds a great race car, I know we went back-and-forth all year in the points battle, my crew worked their tails off all year, we are glad to be celebrating after this race, we were conservative on tires, Don was setting a great pace there tonight, we were glad we didn't hit a lot of traffic. I have to thank everyone from the fans, our souvenir people, and all of our sponsors for their support."
Richards was able to get around Bloomquist to finish 3rd in the Kentucky Fuel, Roush-Yates, Rocket Ford as Bloomquist wound up 4th, ending the year second in points in the Miller Brothers Construction, Roush-Yates, Bloomquist Race Cars Ford. Cook finished the season off with a top five finish in the D&R Racing, Rockstar Energy Drink, MasterSbilt Chevrolet.
Completing the top ten were John Blankenship of Williamson, WV; Steve Francis of Ashland, KY; Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN; Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL; and R.J. Conley of Wheelersburg, OH.

Aukland Aces Atomic DTWC
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
By Scott Wolfe
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO- Schrader's K-C Raceway has a new name (See separate story), thus in essence making Zanesville Ohio driver and Late Model Hall of Famer Rick Aukland the first driver to win at Atomic Speedway since 1983. Aukland claimed the first leg of the U.S. Steel 31st Annual/Sunoco Dirt Track World Championship Saturday night at the newly renamed Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio, where he claimed the 30-lap, $3,000 to win modified A-main.
A large crowd and 94 of the Region's best modified driver's were on hand for a rain-postponed 2nd day of the Dirt Track World Championship modified show Friday night, where the field for the Saturday night finals was set. A large crowd joined the overflowing field through four rain delays. The Modifieds were able to complete their program Friday; however, the Lucas Oil Late Model’s portion of the slate was suspended after a heavy rain until Saturday. Thursday night's program had earlier been postponed by rain to Friday at noon. The Lucas Oil summary follows below.
High winds dried Thursday and Friday's muck to a hard, baked surface. Unlike, Friday when the track was super-fast from top to bottom, Saturday's program saw the track lock down unlike the normal Atomic racing surface. Despite losing the high-against-the-wall feel that is prominent at Atomic, speeds were fast and furious on the low side.
Promoter Carl Short was once-again well-pleased with the K-C/Atomic atmosphere, but disappointed in the weather and the havoc it created. Tentatively and reportedly, the DTWC will be at Atomic for at least the next two years with positive indication that it will be the "Home of the DTWC".
Low rider Aukland said, "I knew the key was staying in my line, keeping it straight, and not wavering too high out of the groove or too low below it. I was fortunate to start up front."
Aukland continued, "The track actually was pretty good for all the rain we had. I appreciate the track crew for working so hard the last three days to make this race possible. The weather is what-it-is and we happened to be in the right spot. I'd like to thank my crew and owner for a great car, and hopefully we put on a great show for the fans."
Said second place Bobby Kitchen, "I had a good car, but was a little disappointed I couldn't keep it up front. I just needed a little more. Thanks to Jr. Nolan and the crew for putting me in the driver's seat."
"It's been a tough year at times," said third place Aaron Scott. "But we came on strong at the end and really had fun tonight. The car was good, but we just needed a little more. I was glad to hang on to third, but would have liked to put it up front. Thanks to all of my sponsors, crew, and car owner."
After rain wiped out the program Thursday, the Modified portion of the DTWC program was to start at 2 p.m. Friday. Sunny skies greeted the crowd early, but pop-up showers four-times delayed the program. After the first delay, the modified program was on target to finish on time for the Lucas Oil late models, but three more times rain slowed the action.
Cars from seven states were on hand for the modified portion of the program that saw Bart Hartman blister the track at a 15:258 which reportedly was a new track record. Further research revealed that AMRA National Champion Kenny Johnson maintained the track record, set in July at 15:226. Never-the-less, Friday saw a fast track and fierce qualifying-heat competition. Cars from the AMRA, UMP, TSMA, and IMCA were represented in the line-up.
Saturday's feature stacked early leader Bobby Kitchen and Rick Aukland against each other with AMRA champ Johnson, fast timer Hartman, 2010 AMRA Road Warrior Champ Matt Holcomb, and the colorful Corey Conley right in the wake.
Great late model heats set the tone for the 30-lap mod feature. Early on multiple groove racing saw side-by-side action, but that quickly shifted to a blitzing freight train around the bottom.
NASCAR legend Kenny Schrader came off the tail to 14th, while young Dustin Linville made some room on the high side of the back chute to charge from 14th to 9th, and Rob Stambaugh from 16th to 11th. K-C Provisional and second place points man at the track behind Dave Fireball Pinkerton came from 27th to 20th.
While great action occurred deep in the pack Kitchen set the early tone, only to have Aukland root the young driver out for number one on lap eight. Hartman had his number 75 flying in third, and moved up out of the groove. There he cut a tire with two laps to go, setting up a drag race to the finish.
Earlier the AMRA's Mike McPherson, Aaron Scott, Tanner Wilson, and Rick Corbin--who moved up the ladder-- engaged in a torrid battle for the top five.
Aukland never received the expected challenge at the finish as he roared on to the win. Hard charger was former TSMA champion Kevin Morehouse in a 15th to 7th place run. 2011 TSMA champ Mark Dickson narrowly missed the show and was an alternate.
Rounding out the top ten were Aukland, Kitchen, Scott, Corbin, McPherson, Conley, Morehouse, Jesse Wisecarver, Dustin Linville, and Dave Jamison.
